UNIT 4: SETTLEMENT (THIRD YEAR GEOGRAPHY)

1) SETTLEMENT:
The Settlement is divided into two types: Urban and rural. In the book you have a chart about the main aspect concerning both settlements and the criteria followed to differentiate towns/villages form cities.

2) RURAL SETTLEMENT:
There are three types of rural settlement: Dispersed or scattered (hamlets f.i.), Nucleated and Interspersed. The settlements could also be classified into several types depending their shape (radial, lineal or nucleated) or its function.

3) URBAN SETTLEMENT
 The most important in this section is to define a city in its complexity. First the functions of a city are explained in a chart you have to remember, in a second place you have the hierarchy of the cities, and finally it is explained how to  make an analysis to a city following the criteria below:
-Site and situation
-Urban plan: Orthogonal, radiocentric, irregular
-Urban construction: old buildings, blocks, single family homes, shacks or shanties

In fourth place you have the structure of the cities divided into city center, CBD, historic centers, residential areas, industrial areas, green zones,  and suburban areas.

4) URBAN PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
In this part there are defined the major problems occurred to a city: The pollution and other problems agains t the environment, the infrastructures and the transport.

5) SETTLEMENT IN SPAIN
The section 5 is a review of the contents above focused in the specific case of Spain.

CORK CITY (IRELAND)

The city of Cork is the administrative capital of the Southwestern region of Ireland, and the most populated nucleus in the historical province of Munster, actually, with its 119,000 inhabitants Cork is the second largest city of the Republic of Ireland. Cork was founded by a monastic order supported by Saint Finbarr in the 6th Century, and it has been attacked, sacked, destroyed and re-built by the Vikings along the 9th and 10th centuries, finally Norsemen constructed a port on the area and Cork became a city. Saint Finbarr Cathedral and the seaside houses at the port are the most interesting places to visit in Cork. HOMEWORK Study the administrative geography of Ireland

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY OF IRELAND

One of the most important and shocking places in Ireland, actually in Northern Ireland, is the  Giants Causeway on the north coast of the island, in the County Antrim. The landscape is the result of the volcanic eruption and it forms part of an unique heritage.
The Giants causeway is the most popular Northern Ireland tourists attraction and one of the most particular geological landscapes in Europe. You can fly over it watching this video above. HOMEWORK Try to find on the internet other wonderful places from Ireland. Make a sum about the information you have found, write it and add a picture or an image. Do not forget to write the name of the site you have visited.
